Dr. David Campbell, DSOM, LAc

Wild Oak Wellness is a comprehensive Integral Healing practice, which focuses on Holistic Chinese Medicine and other natural healing modalities, founded by Dr. David Campbell.

Below is a conversation between Dr. David Campbell of Wild Oak Wellness and Dr. Hunter Peterson NMD of Coeur d’Alene Healing Arts about the idea of Vital Energy and its role in health and healing.

Dr. David Campbell is currently taking new patients in Coeur d’Alene, ID at his office in the Coeur d’Alene Healing Arts Building in downtown Coeur d’Alene.

Dr. David Campbell is a proud American patriot. Both of his grandfathers fought for the United States in WW2, one in Europe and the other in the Pacific. Dr. Campbell supports the U.S. Constitution and its establishment of basic human rights, personal liberty, and equality under the law. He and his wife Allison moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 2021, seeking refuge from Portland, Oregon as it was seized by neo-marxist forces clashing with police and destroying small businesses, leading to a rapid increase in violent crime and homelessness. They have found Coeur d’Alene to be their dream come true, and they look forward to raising a family in a place that has such strong family values as North Idaho does. David supports basic freedoms as the bedrock of our Democratic Republic, and knows that our nation is stronger because of our diversity of backgrounds, beliefs, and opinions.

David has been passionate about holistic health since he was a teenager (in the 1990’s & early 2000’s) searching for ways to reduce acne and anxiety as well as improve digestion and athletic performance. He learned the benefits of eating organic foods, drinking filtered water, breathing deeply, and practicing mindfulness while still in high school. During this time David also developed a love of the outdoors, spending a lot of time hiking and camping as a Boy Scout, eventually earning the Eagle Scout rank.

While in college, David pursued interests in creative writing, literature, and anthropology. He also loved researching topics related to the nature of consciousness. Through studying biology, physics, philosophy, and religious teachings David pursued an ever deeper understanding of consciousness, intelligence, and awareness. David was, at the time, working in the supplements section of a local health food store, where he learned about many herbal, dietary, and health products and their benefits. During this time, David had his first acupuncture treatments, and he was amazed at how profound their effects were for him.

After college, David spent 2 years in a Post-Bac Pre-Med program, studying Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Mycology as well as working several part-time jobs. During this time he was involved in a car accident. While stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on a freeway, his car was hit by a van moving quickly in the carpool lane that had lost control. Luckily David did not break any bones or seriously injure any organs, but he was scraped and bruised with a concussion and whip-lash injuries to his neck. After several days of rest, he sought chiropractic care, which helped him improve, but eventually he hit a plateau, and while he was in less pain, he was not feeling comfortable in his body. He eventually found an Osteopathic clinic where he received CranioSacral therapy, which helped him fully recover after a few sessions. After this David studied CranioSacral therapy himself at the Upledger Institute, even before applying to Osteopathic Medical Schools.

After taking the MCAT, David applied to Osteopathic Medical Schools and began interviewing for enrollment. David was accepted to multiple schools, but he had a change of heart, feeling that these schools were no longer true to the holistic roots of Osteopathic Medicine, so he declined to attend Osteopathic Medical School. When David found the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM), he immediately felt at home. He applied to the Naturopathic Doctorate program, and added a Masters in Acupuncture to his degree path. He was accepted and began attending the same year that he would have begun at an Osteopathic Medical School. In that first year his studies were similar to many other types of Medical programs with physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, anatomy, and pathology courses, but the few courses he took in Classical Chinese Medicine had piqued his interest. By the time NCNM became a University (NUNM.edu), they also created a Doctorate degree program in East Asian Medicine, the Doctorate of Science in Oriental Medicine (DSOM). In his second year at NUNM, David switched into the DSOM program, which not only taught diagnostic and therapeutic theories of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), but also required him to learn to translate the ancient medical texts from Classical Chinese to English, as well as mentor under his instructors, who taught clinically relevant techniques that often fell outside of textbook information, among other educational requirements.

One of the final requirements for earning a DSOM Doctorate level degree was to write and present a Doctoral Capstone Thesis. David wrote his capstone on “Translating Qi: The Science of Spirit and the Phenomenological Nature of Quantum Biology.” David’s Capstone was voted to be the best among all those submitted that year by the program instructors who judged the projects based on both the writing and presentation of the projects.

After Graduating in 2018, Dr. Campbell helped to found and organize a non-profit organization called Whole Systems Healthcare (wshcare.org) and establish its flagship clinic in Portland, OR. Since then, Dr. Campbell has also worked as an employee at 2 other privately owned clinics, one in Portland and the other in Spokane, WA.

Dr. David Campbell established his own clinical practice, Wild Oak Wellness, in downtown Coeur d’Alene, in March of 2022. He feels that he has finally found the perfect fit, where he is able to practice in a much more patient and person centered way under his own self employment. While building a business has provided its own set of challenges, Dr. Campbell loves being able to spend the extra time and effort to give each person who comes in for treatment the best possible results in health improvement that he can achieve. Dr. Campbell loves helping people recover from pain and other health issues, because he knows that health is a resource for living a meaningful life, directed by purpose and values and engaging with family, friends, and community. Dr. Campbell is excited to contribute his small part to helping Coeur d’Alene, Kootenai County, and North Idaho in general continue to thrive.
